Mental Health Awareness for Sport and Physical Activity

Our course

Mental Health Awareness for Sport and Physical Activity, was developed with support from UK Coaching, and is designed for coaches, sport administrators, volunteers and front of house staff.

What's covered?

We've listened to people living with mental health problems and people working in the sport and physical activity sectors to create a practical workshop that will help you:   

  • Understand common misconceptions about mental health and the impact of stigma and discrimination
  • Identify the positive impact that being active has on physical and mental health
  • Appreciate the barriers that stop people getting active
  • Talk confidently about mental health
  • Know where to signpost people to if they need support
  • Identify practical actions to make your service more accessible for everyone

Course details

  • No prior knowledge of mental health is necessary
  • Three-hour workshop
  • Can be delivered in-house at the location of your choice
  • Up to 20 delegates can attend
  • £325-£425 depending on location

Our Keynote Speaker  is a champion for better mental health and works with us to deliver training solutions aswell as keynote speaches. He speaks candidly on his own experiences, suffering from clinical depression, highlighting issues with stigma, diagnosis, being sectioned and general perception issues.

This two day course qualifies you as a Youth Mental Health First Aider, giving you:

  • An in-depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing

  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues 

  • Confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress

  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening 

  • Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s through self-help sites, their place of learning, the NHS, or a mix – engaging with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate

  • Ability to support a young person with a long term mental health issue or disability to thrive

  • Tools to look after your own mental wellbeing ​

Format
  • Two day face to face course across four manageable sessions

  • Each session is built around a Youth Mental Health First Aid action plan

  • Learning takes place through a mix of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities

  • We limit numbers to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn

Everyone who completes the course gets:

  • A certificate of attendance to say you are a Youth Mental Health First Aider

  • A Youth MHFA manual to refer to whenever you need it

  • A workbook including some helpful tools to support your own mental health
